Why did part of the foil come off when I opened my vial?

If a piece of the foil pulled away when you removed the cap, this is cosmetic and not a defect. The vial is still sealed and sterile.

The foil is just the outer trim around the cap. It isn't what keeps the vial sealed. The actual seal is the rubber stopper underneath, and that stays intact even when a bit of foil is pulled loose or a small gap shows on the side.

There's a correct way to remove the cap. Each cap has an arrow on top that indicates the direction to snap it off. Snap it in the direction the arrow points and the top comes away cleanly. Removing it against the arrow can cause the top to break improperly, which is usually what pulls at the foil.
